Election drama: INEC says no to Oby Ezekwesili
In the early hours of today Presidential Aspirant Oby Ezekwesili of (ACPN )Allied Congress Party of Nigeria announced that she was stepping down from the presidential race to form a coalition to kick PDP and APC out of office.
Now, it looks like the table is turning and the electoral commission of Nigeria has told her that she cannot back-down from the race at the stage in which she is playing in.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, has released an official statement on behalf of the Commission
It is impossible for any presidential candidate to withdraw from the race now. According to the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 General Elections, the last day for withdrawal by candidates or replacement of withdrawn candidates by political parties was 17th November 2018 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections.
The deadline for Ezekwesili or any candidate in that category to withdraw or be replaced has passed.
The statement released by Commission made it clear that it is rather too late to back-down from the race now, but my state of confusion is were these aspirant not aware of this clause before they decided to step down today or was it a hidden clause that was not made known to them before they declared their intentions.
Well, the summary is this Nigeria is never free of drama and melodrama. But indeed this is a big shame on the political landscape and it leaves us all with one question, are we truly ready for democracy?
