Curtain Closes at 2018 FIFA World Cup – Winners vs. Losers
It has been a remarkable 1-month of football action at the recently concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Unlike other World Cup’s the 2018 tournament popped up a lot of surprises daily making a mockery of bookmarkers predictions and leaving the supposed favorites with sour grapes. While Germany couldn’t make it out of their group, the likes of Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Brazil and Uruguay couldn’t escape the round of 16 and quarter final respectively. Talk of Russia, Belgium and Croatia – these three teams were indeed a revelation at the tournament.
After France emerged winners at the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday beating Croatia 4-2, the French national team succeeded in recording a 20-year return for the trophy which they last won as a host in 1998. After the game, Luka Modric was awarded Golden Ball for the Best Player of the Tournament while Kylian Mbappe was awarded Best Young Player of the Tournament. Other winners included Thibaut Courtois – Golden Glove, Eden Hazard – Silver Ball, Antoine Griezmann – Bronze Ball, Harry Kane – Golden Boot with 6 Goals and the Spanish national team with Fair Play Award.
Other notable talents at the World Cup includes Denis Cheryshev, Aleksandr Golovin, Kasper Schmeichel and Ahmed Musa amongst others. Sadly, we will all have to wait for another for years to experience this type of adrenaline rush again but before then, we can simply enjoy the summer transfer window and its drama.
