Lawmakers at loggerhead over INEC budget
Lawmakers of the National assembly, met, Thursday, for the consideration of the 2019 budget proposal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Lawmakers made up of joint Committee members from both houses of the National Assembly were meeting to synchronize the funding positions proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari and the INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmud.
At the sitting in Senate Room 328, Senator Ovie omo-Agege (Delta Central) motioned for the Committee to immediately approve the N189 billion request made by the INEC chairman, before the Committee on Wednesday.
Senator Mohammed Hassan (Yobe South), however objected to Omo-Agege’s position and immediately proposed for the joint committee to recommend the release the N143 billion for INEC as provisioned for in the 2019 Election Budget Proposal sent to the National Assembly by President Buhari in July.
The conversation, hence became ostensibly heated and the Committee Chairman, Senator Suleiman Nazif (Bauchi North) became forced to appeal to members who were already on their feet in a shouting match, to calm down.
Senator Nazif, had to then announce that the meeting would continue behind closed doors and hence requested that the media should immediately vacate the venue of the deliberations.
Other House of Representatives members who are part of the joint committee joined in on the meeting which is currently ongoing as at the time of this report.
